Members and Society are Big Winners

A benefit wine tasting and raffle drawing proved to be a fun Saturday afternoon for those attending on April 19th. This event was a joint venture with Debbie Hebert, owner of Old Willow Wine Shoppe on Paddock Drive in Glenview.

Our Glenview merchants never cease to amaze me as to their generosity. Those included Abt, Ace Hardware, Bistro Monet, Hackney’s, North Suburban Florals, Charter I Bank, Johnny’s, Steve’s Auto Repair, Glenview Cycle, Marriott Courtyard, Wyndham Suites and Wildfire Restaurant.

Lovely raffle baskets and member donations came from Mary Lee Attea, Beverly Dawson, Mary Fisk, Mary Jane Stevens, Ace Realie, Chuck Getz and Deb Hebert.

Thank you to the 90 members who bought their raffle tickets in support of this benefit. That was a clear $900.00 to go toward the repairs on the farmhouse museum and help toward funding air-conditioning.

Glenview resident, Brian Mazzaferri provided music through out the afternoon and served as the announcer as he drew each winner from the ticket barrel. The following members’ lucky tickets were drawn by Brian: The Anstaetts, Helen Hill, Don Long, Corinne Spaulding, Bonnie Kersten, Mary Ellen Wolff, Judge Robert Downing, Mary Fisk, Kent Fuller, Toni Anderson, Pauline Girocco, T. Gallanis, John Sanderson, Dorothy Murphy, Norm Carlson, Vivian Frasier, The Howenstein’s, Mary Lou Nolan, Helen Bammesberger, and also Debbie Bales, Al Seiling, Lenore Pettinger, Pat Bruno, and Deb Hebert.

A huge thank you to the following members who gave of their time to help make the benefit a success: Bob Coffin, Beverly Dawson, Chuck Getz, Bonnie Kersten, Mary Lou Nolan, Ginny Petersen, Ace Realie and Mary Jane Stevens.

Volunteers -- GAHS wants you

Are you a person with a strong interest in Family and/or village history? Perhaps you are an "empty nester" with some extra time to devote to volunteer activities. Are you curious about that old yellow farmhouse at 1121 Waukegan Road? Would you be interested to volunteer on a Sunday afternoon to conduct tours of the Farmhouse Museum (we offer training sessions)? This and other volunteer activities are available. For more information email us via our website or leave a message at 847-724-2235. We'd be pleased to talk with you.

We've "Gone Green"

Senior Vice President John Sanderson, who oversees maintenance of the Farmhouse Museum and Hibbard Library, has replaced incandescent bulbs with fluorescent ones in most light fixtures on the buildings and grounds.  His research revealed a potential $600 annual savings on the GAHS electric bill.  An additional and even more important factor is that the bulbs save energy.  This project was funded by a generous donation from Board Member Ed Koenig.

From the President's Corner

This year's Annual Meeting was held in Glenview's Wyndham Hotel Atrium.  A good time was had by all as everyone enjoyed music by the Knack Duo.  The raffle, under the auspices of Charles Goetz and Bob Coffin, provided fun for attendees and profit for the Society.  Special thanks to Lorraine Milius for her generosity in underwriting a portion of the expenses, and also to Toni Anderson for providing table centerpieces.

Sincere thanks to each and every one of you for your ongoing support of the Glenview Area Historical Society.

--Charles "Ace" Realie

From Our Curator Mary Melzer

Lynn Furmet of the Glenview Square Dance Club provided two outfits plus a poster for an exhibit to celebrate the group's 50th anniversary. A recent issue of the Glenview Announcements carried a feature article. The exhibit has been very popular, bring in a number of visitors during Sunday Open House hours.

Jaunita Ramsay, A GAHS founding member, recently moved to smaller quarters and donated a beautiful vintage settee to our collection. It is currently on Display in the foyer of the Farmhouse.

The Society hosted about 20 members of the N.E. IL (North East Illinois Historical Council) on November 10. GAHS received many compliments on the Facilities and artifact collections.
