President's corner
I have been a member of the Glenview History Center for many years, but not until I became President did I realize what a valuable service the Center provides to the community at large. Two recent newspaper articles prove this point. The January 24th issue of the Glenview Journal published an article entitled “Add 3 more names to the War Memorial”. John Crawford, a Center member and journalist for the Glenview Journal, requested the Center for information on the stories of each of the military men listed on the Glenview War Memorial. After extensive research by our own librarian Beverly Dawson, details on the stories of the men were determined. During this research Beverly discovered three Glenview servicemen who should have been listed. The missing names will now be added to the memorial. Then, in the February 18th and 25th issues of the Triblocal, special reports were published on the history of Milwaukee Avenue. Again, our Center, along with other surrounding history centers was contacted by the Tribune journalists for information to prepare their reports.
To maintain this valuable community resource, namely, the Glenview History Center, the Board has to organize fundraisers. So this year, at our Annual Ice Cream Social, we will hold a yard sale. (see below for more information). Also, to maintain this valuable community resource, we are looking for additional docents, and volunteers for our special events. Think about stepping up, and call Mary Long at 847-724-4115.

notes from the library
Retired High School District 225 English teacher Allen Ruter recently donated a large number of Glenbrook South Etruscan yearbooks. His donation helped to round out the Hibbard Library's own collection. While we are still missing volumes for a few years, we hope to acquire those in the future and eventually own the complete set. We are grateful to Allen for his generosity to the Glenview History Center.

Spotlight on our young volunteers
Last summer Theo Eisenstein, a new graduate of New Trier High School, dropped in to our Hibbard Library to see if he might be of help over the summer. His first project was to help sort and organize vintage newspapers and other documents which had accumulated over many years in the basement of the library. Theo now assists in the library on a regular basis, planning his volunteer time around his college classes. His many ideas and suggestions are very welcome. It's a great pleasure to have him with us.
Lauren Dod, a sixth grader at Field Middle School, has become one of our most enthusiastic docents at the Farmhouse Museum. Her boundless enthusiasm, remarkable interest in history and terrific ideas are an ongoing source of delight to all. The adult docents who volunteer with her have to work hard to keep up and enjoy every minute of it.
Congratulations
...to the Glenview Public Library and Glenbrook South High School Honors History students on the completion of their very successful Veterans Oral History Project. A reception was held in the Library's Maynard Room on March 14 in recognition of all participants, including GHC members Dorothy Murphy, Lloyd Kuehn, Ed Koenig and John Crawford. Co-sponsors of the project were the Joseph M. Sesterhenn American Legion post 166 and the Glenview History Center.
In Appreciation
In February, the Glenview History Center once again benefitted from a wine tasting hosted by Old Willow Wine Shoppe. Co-chairs for the event were Mary Lee Attea and Nancy Eisenstein. A million thanks to Debbie and her staff at the Old Willow for their generous support of the GHC.
Condolences
The Glenview community recently lost two of its most prominent citizens. Dennis Hebson, who led the historic Hackney's chain of restaurants for many years passed away in February following a brief illness. Denny was known for his generosity and deep devotion to the village. Ray Carlson, patriarch of the Carlson Heating and Air Conditioning Company family, left us on March 6. Ray had been involved in the civic life of the village and served on the Park District Board for many years. Condolences are extended to the Hebson and Carlson families. The absence of Denny and Ray will be keenly felt in this community.
Ice Cream Social and Yard Sale
The Glenview History Center Annual Ice Cream Social is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 11 from 1 pm until 4pm. In addition to delicious ice cream, sundaes and floats, we will also be featuring a yard sale.
It has been ten years since our last yard sale and many items may be cluttering up your home that would make great additions in another person’s home. Now is the perfect time to think about donating your attic and garage treasures as thoughts of spring-cleaning come to mind. We will be accepting collectibles, china, glassware, small lamps, old photos and frames, baskets, hard cover and paperback books and interesting odds and ends during the month of June. Please no large items that require two people to carry or big pieces of furniture. We are not set up for that.
Should you have any questions or concerns about an item, please call Nancy Eisenstein or leave a message at the GHC 847-724-2235 and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
