Re: Ice Cream Social/ Yard Sale
Sunday, July 11, 2010
1pm-4pm
The weather for the 2010 Ice Cream Social was pretty good. It was hot, somewhat humid with a light breeze that kept the bugs away. The World Cup was playing out at the same hours of the event.
The banner and yard sale sign were posted by Charles Goetz. The yard sign was very visible from the street but the ice cream social sign always seemed to have cars and vans in front of it.
About 9:30 the set up began. Bob Coffin arranged the speakers for music of yesteryear. Bev and Bill Dawson, Ben and Theo Eisenstein, Ken Lantz, Mary Lee Attea, Don and Mary Long, Sue Forrester, Mary Jane Stevens, Lorraine Milius and Joyce Hutchings readied the grounds, house and museum. Their muscles got a work out! Bill Attea bought and brought ice for the coolers. The awnings were set up over the serving and cashier tables and over some yard sale treasures. Many thanks for the awnings brought by the Dawsons and by Joyce Hutching’s daughter. They came in handy.
Yard Sale enthusiasts started to show up an hour before the starting time.
Bev and Bill Dawson bought and brought sandwiches from Jimmy Johns for the volunteers at lunchtime. They were delicious treats and greatly appreciated.
Don Long and Bob Coffin directed the customers in.
Lauren Dodd, our enthusiastic junior volunteer purchased some items and then helped out at both the yard sale and ice cream social
Scoopers Lenore Pettinger, Helen Bammesberg, Suzanne Goetz and Pam Kitts worked a light and then steady pace. There were only a few times customers had to wait for their desserts.
Margareta Brown, Kirsten Synnestvedt and Ginny Peterson were great cashiers for the social. Sue and Mike Forrester and Bill Attea and Bill Dawson were busy collecting money from the yard sale customers.
Bill Dawson ably took over treasurer duties this year as Warren was out of town.
Docent duty was shared by Mary Lou Nolan, Dorothy Murphy and Pat Riedle.
Mary Long was busy both inside and outside with the yard sale.
The Hibbard Library was manned by Mary Lee Attea, Joyce Hutchings and Mary Jane Stevens. There were many more treasures inside than customers.
Bob Warskow helped with the yard sale and then with clean up along with
John Sanderson, Charles and Suzanne Goetz,The Longs, The Eisensteins, The
Dawsons,The Atteas,The Forresters, Bob Coffin,Mary Jane Stevens, Pam Kitts and Ken Lantz.
This year for publicity, an ad was placed in the Glenview Journal and the Pioneer Press by Mary Long. Bev Dawson contacted Trib Local and Whats Happening. Neither one came through with any printed word publicity. The internet version of Trib Local made reference to the social. Nancy Eisenstein contacted Make it Happen and they posted the publicity on their web site. Roleeta Nandan posted publicity on our web site and on Facebook. Mary Lee Attea submitted information to GVTV but we aren’t sure whether it was telecast or not.
Nancy Eisenstein inquired by e-mail about information going into the Village Report and was told by Janet Spector Bishop, Communications Director ,Village of Glenview, “we don't run general community events in the Village Report unless they have a strong Village tie-in (for example, President Cummings is speaking or the Village itself is heavily involved through its Police or Fire Departments). But I am cc'ing our GVTV Coordinator, who can certainly promote it on the air through our Community Bulletin Board. Hope that helps!”
Flyers were inserted in the spring GHC newsletter.
I want to thank everyone who helped lend a hand or hands for this event. Many board members came early and stayed late. This event was successful because of all the wonderful volunteers who are so generous with their time and money.
This year ice cream cones, sundaes and floats were popular. We got lots of compliments on the variety of ice cream flavors and how good it tasted. The children liked the cake and brownies. Everybody had a good time!
